Annointed with Joy: Hebrews part 1
Hebrews 1 talks about Christ being anointed with joy. This come in the middle of a discourse on the exaltation of Christ over the angels due to his work on the cross. This phrase struck me as unusual. One would assume that the phrase would be "anointed with glory/honor/majesty/etc." but it isn't. It's "anointed with joy." Joy seems something so trivial, maybe it shouldn't be, but it's not a trait that we typically associate with the creator of the universe, a role clearly fulfilled by both God the father and God the son in this passage. Why joy? I think that it's fitting due to the fact that it comes in the middle of a passage on the messiah's salvific work and his participation in humanity's suffering. If the angels take such joy is the salvation of one sinner, then God must take much more joy in the adoption of the lost as sons and daughters. It is fitting, therefore, that Jesus Messiah who accomplished this work should be anointed with joy.
