Tokyo: Day Eight

We went to Ueno Zoo. We didn't spend a great deal of time here. We did see a soft shelled turtle and a turtle that looks like a dinosaur. We saw some Japanese macaques, a tiger, some otters, pandas, owls, etc. I wish we could have spent more time in Ueno. The zoo is located in a big park. The atmosphere is nice. The zoo itself contains a Thai pavilion given to the zoo by Thailand as a gift of friendship. There was also a pagoda. Within the park, there are also several museums. including the National Museum, which we did not get to visit. It seemed like a nice area to explore and spend some time in. I read that the National Museum does not take cash but does take Suica.
Transportation
Transportation in Tokyo is fairly easy. There are a number of train lines. The lines run both above ground and below ground. In fact, some lines run both. Trains seem to come at regular intervals. So long as you know where you are going and what lines you need to take, the only other thing you need to know is the end-point of the line in the direction you are going. A smartphone with a data plan is great. It also helps immensely if you have a Suica card. The card costs 500 yen, I think. The actual upfront cost may be two or three times as much which leaves you with some money on the card. (500 yen is currently $4.) You use the card to pay for train tickets among other things. You simply swipe in at the station, then swipe out. It is possible to buy tickets, but you have to know how much it costs to go from your beginning station to your ending station, and if you have to take several lines, you need a ticket for each section, which makes it very complicated. I don't know if it is possible to have a ticket for several line transitions, but I assume this would be more like a pass. There are other methods of paying for tickets (less expensive?), but Suica is a good way to go.
